Vill man ut i naturen ligger flera naturreservat och badplatser nära, och stadsparken längs Åkers kanal är ortens vardagsrum. Skärgårdsstad och de nybyggda halvöarna som Täljö ger vattennära boende, men ofta med längre väg till det mesta och glesare busstrafik. Samtidigt är spannet inom kommunen stort. Villastråk som Österskär och Svinninge ligger i topp, medan delar av centralorten och skärgårdsdelarna kring Ljusterö ligger långt under. Around the shopping centre and the canal there are around twenty cafes, around twenty restaurants, a cinema at Sliphuset, several gyms and sports halls, a library and shops for most needs. For anyone wanting to get out into nature, several nature reserves and bathing spots are close by, and the town park along Åkers kanal is the local living room. This is not a place where you have to go into the city for a film or a dinner."},{"type":"p","text":"Then there is the other municipality, out on the water. Ljusterö is reached by ferry and has its own village shop, church, local history museum and bathing spots, but a considerably thinner everyday range of services. Further out lie islands such as Finnhamn with a hostel, a cafe-pub and campsites, popular day-trip destinations in summer. Skärgårdsstad and the newly built peninsulas such as Täljö offer waterside living, but often with a longer way to most things and sparser bus services. Living in the archipelago parts means both longer journeys and a different everyday economy than in the terraced-house blocks."},{"type":"h2","text":"Money, safety and everyday life"},{"type":"p","text":"The statistics explain why people move here anyway. Median income is among the highest in the country, only a small percentage live with low financial standing, and unemployment is clearly below the national average. The share with a longer higher education is high. At the same time, the spread within the municipality is wide. Detached-house stretches such as Österskär and Svinninge sit at the top, while parts of the main town and the archipelago areas around Ljusterö sit well below. The weakest point in the profile is employment among young adults, which is below the national average, which fits with the fact that many are university-educated on ordinary salaries and commute to jobs in Stockholm without being able to afford to live there."},{"type":"p","text":"Safety looks good. Reported crimes are well below the national average, and no area in the municipality is on the police's list of vulnerable areas. The reputation for insecurity sometimes attached to Åkersberga from neighbouring areas is not backed up by the figures. What does keep coming up in local conversation, however, is municipal politics, where disputes over building permits, shoreline protection and fees have left their mark over the years, even as the municipality tends to be praised for one of the country's lowest municipal tax rates."},{"type":"p","text":"Österåker suits car-owning families who want water, boating and more house for their money than in Täby or Danderyd, and who can live with the commute. Anyone dependent on frequent public transport, who wants their job in the municipality, or who is looking for city life around the corner should think again.
